RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT MANAGER Specialty Dairy Ingredients

Our client is one of the world’s leading multinational companies developing producing and selling natural, nutritional and high-quality dairy nutritional ingredients and other functional ingredients. They produce and market a broad range of high-quality, distinctive ingredients and semi–finished products based on whey, milk and other dairy components. These products are sold to food, beverage, sports nutrition; infant foods, nutritional supplement and pharmaceutical manufacturers across the world. They are seeking an experienced R&D Manager for Specialty Dairy Ingredients is responsible for development and execution of exploratory research, strategic technology initiatives, and NPD project launches around customized dairy-based ingredients and applications. They are accountable for managing and developing scientists and/or technicians in support of R&D activities. Responsible for ensuring a robust new product pipeline that can be executed with effective and efficient processes. Collaboratively develops technical strategies, cross- functionally leads execution of key initiatives that meet business and Quality standards. Partners across the Enterprise in overcoming project hurdles to define/meet timelines and deliver technical excellence. Delivers research and technology advancement projects to drive value for the Enterprise.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and motivate a technical staff of up to 10 Food Scientists

  • Manage strategic direction of R&D group

  • Prioritize project load and ensure projects are viable

  • Manage a multi-million dollar budget

  • Monthly R&D project reviews and semi-annual R&D reviews

  • Interact with sales and marketing for customer support, product improvements, new product ideas and cost reductions.

  • Interact with manufacturing for process improvements, cost reductions and transition of new products and processes.

  • Troubleshooting production and customer issues.

  • Assist QC with calibration and implementation of new production lab equipment.

  • Assist with design, development and transfer of new analytical test methods.

  • Participation in charter teams (ex. Quality, Cost Reduction and Operations)

  • Participation in Change Control Board

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MUST have a BA degree (MS degree preferred) - in Food Science, Dairy Science, Biochemistry, Food Nutrition, Biology or Similar Science. MS or PHD is preferred

  • MUST have at least 7+years’ of relevant R&D experience with: DAIRY INGREDIENTS, DAIRY PROTEINS, DAIRY PROTEINS etc. used in healthy food and beverages i.e. SPORTS NUTRITION, CELL NUTRITION, NUTRACEUTICALS, MEDICAL NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS ETC.

  • Must have managerial experience, having supervised a department of Food Scientists in a professional R&D setting.

  • Must be able to lead multidisciplinary, international technical teams with the focus on developing new products and implementing product and/or process changes.

  • Must be able to translate knowledge and problems into concrete actions to meet internal and external customer demands.

  • MUST have a strong business acumen and be a key business partner for the division

  • MUST be able to determine and steer the business implications of change-management

  • MUST have the skills to manage a professional R&D organization

  • MUST be able to diagnoses and problem solve while manage complex multidisciplinary projects

  • MUST have excellent communication skills, (verbal and written) and have experience interacting with customers

  • MUST be able to relocate to WI and travel occasionally.
