Director Analytical Services – Flavor Manufacturing

Our client is a global manufacturer of high quality flavors and fragrances sold across the globe. Based in the Chicago area, they are actively looking to hire a Director of Analytical Services to oversees the timely analysis for flavor & fragrance projects. Directs the preparation, analysis, interpretation of results, and reports on samples submitted to the lab for instrumental testing. Analysis of essential oils via GC-MS and GS to identify all chemical components in complex mixtures. These samples include consumer goods, raw materials, fresh culinary preparations, and botanicals. Evaluation of these materials may require one or more extraction, and chromatographic techniques including HPLC, SPME or CO2 extraction.


Analytical Services supports projects from the quality department, creative flavor and fragrance divisions as well as problem solving for global divisions and customers.

This job also requires the evaluation of new analytical tools, new technologies and development of new methodologies internally or with external laboratories.

Support creative teams thru Sensory & Duplication projects, manage the duplication process thru identifying unknown compounds, thru development to the final flavor in a bottle analysis.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operates independently in the selection of techniques for sample preparation and chromatographic analysis.

  • Interprets and report results to appropriate customers.

  • Operates, maintain, and repair chromatographic instrumentation including GC-FID, GC-MS, and HPLC. Works with instrument suppliers to resolve issues.

  • Develops new analytical protocols as needed.

  • Train and assist staff with instrumentation and software.

  • Participate in organoleptic evaluations as determined by the Sensory Department.

  • Maintains a secure, clean and safe work environment.

  • Adhere to all organizational safety guidelines.

  • Mentor, develop team members thru, Explanation, teaching, and training basic analytical tools and data interpretation and report writing

  • Must maintain the highest standards of data management by creating consistent, reliable data which will ensure accuracy and in turn, maximize the use of data and confidence in decision making

  • Other duties may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and guide a staff of analytical chemists. Perform yearly performance evaluations. Guide employees on traditional analytical methodology and data interpretation.

Job Requirements:

  • Must have at least a BS degree (MS / PhD is a plus)

  • Must have at least 10+ years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have strong analytical skills in chromatography and sampling techniques. This includes GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, SPME, dynamic/ static headspace, and thermal desorption.

  • Should have experience in the troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing chromatographic/laboratory equipment.

  • Must have effective problem solving abilities as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be self-motivated, detail-orientated, able to work independently, or in a team environment.

  • Must have proven managerial skills

  • Computer skills are a MUST-- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word, ERP and development software like Product vision, ESP, flavor & recipe databases. Individual must be proficient in using Internet software and navigating social media sites.
