The key role of the APPLICATIONS LAB MANAGER is to plan, execute and manage the Ingredient Sample Department, Shipping Department and R&D Technicians. This APPLICATIONS LAB MANAGER will be a key player in communication between R&D & Sales.


  • Review sample requests and ensure all necessary paperwork ships along with samples.

  • Maintains R&D laboratory equipment and performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.

  • Be a leader to promote and drive change in managing inventory in the Lab. Maintains R&D supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.

  • Work with IT to develop inventory systems to improve efficiencies & troubleshoot. Improve inventory systems based on performance and non-conformities.

  • Track the transportation and distribution of inventory; Supervise and participate as needed for daily cycle counts

  • Maintain R&D productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustments.

  • Maintains quality results by participating in the Companies quality assurance program; consulting with QA; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records.

  • Maintains R&D information system by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality.

  • Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress.

  • Maintains R&D staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees in the area’s reporting to the Lab manager

  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.

  • Maintains R&D staff results by counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results and reporting working hours.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

  • Complies with State and Federal continuing education licensure requirements making sure that especially the shipping clerks are certified all the time.

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.


  • Must have at least a BS degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology or any similar science. Masters degree is a plus.

  • Must have a strong science background and at least 5 years of R&D “bench top” Product Development experience as a Food Scientist or Flavorist

  • Must have experience working with value added Ingredient and/or Flavors and prefer a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience (Will consider candidates with 7+ years of experience as individual contributor if you’re ready and able to move-up)

  • Must have good people skills and appropriate personality

  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously

  • Must possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to work with all tiers of the department

  • Strong mathematical and reasoning skills required

  • Good attendance and safety knowledge

  • Computer proficiency required
